Sheikh Nawahda called publicly for the renewal of the Islamic Khalifate, which would "unite all the Moslems in the world against the infidels."

Their true colors are out in the open, for all to see. Too bad most of us remain blind to the threats rising before us.

This isn't really new, is it? I mean since Ataturk abolished the Caliphate in 1924, there have been several calls to reestblish it. I don't expect this new effort to be any more successful than pan-Arabism has been.

1. This is not news.

2. Yaakov and Kai's comments are idiotic at best and offensive at worst.

Reported.

Chris: There is no need to comment as you did. If you want to report something, just report it. Your comment does nothing to further the conversation.

... also, his reporting my comment, which was not offensive nor inflammatory only goes as an attempt to censor opposing opinions. Pretty jacked up.

Really? Seems like the views of Islamic fundamentalists getting so much press that even those who have no eyesight must be well aware of what's going on.

I will say again that it is not good to call attention to yourself from the newsvine staff. Bad. Very bad.

If we follow your line of thought, then one can assume that Christianity is a religion of hate and violence based simply on the asinine blather coming out of Pat Robertson's mouth.

It scares me that there are real people in this world who label Islam as not a religion of peace. These are the same types of people who label Jews as non-human and gays as degenerates. Scary. Really scary.

murat - I do no think that the concept is news. I think the newsworthy part is that the public reason for this is not just to unite the Muslims of the world - it is to "unite all the Muslims in the world against the infidels."

Kai - I believe that Islam has the potential to be a religion of peace. However, it is in the hands of the Muslims of the world to decide whether that is the path that they want to follow. Announcements like this are obviously not helpful.

ChrisA - I am offended by lots of news. Very offended. That does not mean that it is not news.

kilometer - I have not yet found another news source for this. I still have some more digging to do, and will post here if I find another source. Despite this, whatever your views are regarding the objectiveness of Arutz Sheva's reporting, I think it would be a stretch to say that they would make up things like this. Also, there may be Arabic news sources giving this lots of coverage that I have no way to understand.

drhundertwasser - I think that people who browse sites like newsvine have much more exposure and insight to what is going on in the world than most others. Even the casual Internet user does not get this much news through their daily MySpace and Gmail excursions. And even if rioting in Europe and bombings in Iraq are getting press, this is different kind of exposure that calls for worldwide Islam to unite against the infidel.

Why is everyone slamming YAAKOV and saying this is offensive and not newsworthy, even one poster was commenting on his "line of thought" and how we can from it assume that Christianity is a religion of hate and violence... ?

This a legit article from a news agency and there is little if any real comments from him that should be considered offensive. However if everyone is so inclined to whine, then direct it to the actual author of the article, Hillel Fendel.

I have emailed the author of the article (Hillel Fendel) and received the following reply (I took out the name of the source, as I am not sure if it is meant to be public info):

"The source is from an exclusive Arab-affairs expert and former IDF intelligence officer who writes occasionally for Arutz-7 and also for others. his name is xxxx. We trust his work."

Thanks for the comment Dan. Funny how these threads go in certain directions very easily. I personally do not think that any of the major religions today are inherently hate-driven and violent. This does not mean that people who claim to represent these religions cannot perpetrate violent and hateful acts (as any student of history will be well aware).

What a bunch of stupid comments! How about the article itself? Aside from the source, doesn't anyone see anything unusual about the headline? "Restore Worldwide Islamic Rule?" Are we to assume the Turkey and the Middle East is the entire world?

The article is clearly, shall we say, "biased?" Scare tactics.

I think I can agree with that.

As far as Islam being a religion of peace, the millions of peaceful Muslims and the many Muslims who are, uh, not so peaceful, have convinced me that it can be interpreted both ways. Just as many other religions can, including Christianity. To flat out claim that the entire religion is against peace is just, well, ignorant.

      Agree with LankaFool completely.

I don't think any of us would say that militant imams who call for war against infidels are peaceful people. Yes, they use religion to inflame passions and incite violence. But you can do this without religion too. Stalin, for instance, conducted his purges and struck fear into the hearts of his countrymen all in the name of secular communism.

Demagoguery comes in lots of flavors.

If this is the case, that the bulk of the Islamic population is in fact anti-terror, murder, infidel-hate, etc... then unfortunately, that's up to them to prove it. Its open for the moderates to STAND UP and put a stop to these extremists. SHOW and PROVE to the world that you don't condone and support these actions in the name of Islam. That's all it will take... it just simply hasn't happened yet, so you'll understand why the west's perception of Islam as a whole has taken shape as it has.

We keep hearing talk of how its just a few extremists, the moderates aren't like that, etc... but where's the proof? All we're seeing is the imam on the Temple Mount calling for the rule of Islam, etc. How is that proving that its just a few bad seeds? I'm just asking the questions. Where's the mass outcry and defense of the religion from the practitioners themselves?

          Misguided

I think it is easy to take one persons comment and apply it to an entire religion and people.

We often forget how Islam has no hierarchical structure what-so-ever. How many times has bin laden called for a jihad against the west... and all we see is a hundred or so people answering the call. He certainly considers himself a Sheik and can quote the Koran... and yet his call is unheeded among many. (Around 1 billion Muslims worldwide.)

The reason is quite simple. In the Islamic religion there is no hierarchical structure or priesthood. There are no Bishops, Popes etc. The result is that any person with a small enough congregation can say all kinds of things... and unfortunately among people who don't know the region or religion very well... the words are attribute to the religion as a whole.

Don't get me wrong. I think calling for the death of anyone in the name of religion is disgusting. But please do not forget that such calls are made all the time by other religious figures all the time.

I could easily take this passage from the Holy Bible out of context:

Joshua 1:18 "Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage." -The Holy Bible - King James Version

Or am I to believe that Kahanists represent all the Jews.

I think it is time to take a step back... and look at the big picture. There are a few out there who choose to kill and will find any excuse to do so. Let us not legitimize their claim to their religious right any further.

"Let us confess the Truth: Pick out those who are fighting out of zeal for their religious convictions, and you would not have enough to form a full company of fighting men. Our zeal works wonders when it strengthens our tendency towards hatred, enmity, ambition, avarice, evil-speaking…and rebellion. On the other hand, zeal never makes anyone go flying towards goodness, kindness, or temperance.

Our religion was made to root out vices: now it cloaks them, nurses them, stimulates them."

The above text was written by Montaigne around 1580.
