Reading Palestinian Intentions

This article identifies an alternative explanation for what is at the root of the conflict in Israel between Arabs and Jews: "the fuel of the conflict is not the lack of Palestinian self-determination but the existence of Jewish self-determination – thus, as long as Jewish self-determination continues, so will the conflict."

The author goes on to provide evidence from history to support this claim.

The conclusion of the article:

Indeed, Palestinian efforts seem far more comprehensible if seen as directed toward eliminating - or at least undermining - Jewish sovereignty, than in the establishment of their own independence.

If this is true, then making ever more generous proposals regarding Palestinian statehood will be totally unproductive, indeed counterproductive, for these will induce no peaceable response whatsoever. After all, as Muhsin said: "The founding of a Palestinian state is (no more than) a new tool in the continuing battle against Israel."

Thus in the final analysis the crucial question the Israeli leadership- and the international community - must ask themselves is: Upon which of these hypotheses should a prudent nation base its policies? The hypothesis which can account for all the above phenomena or the hypothesis which accounts for none of them?

Servetus

… we, members of the people's council, representatives of the Jewish community of Eretz-Israel and of the Zionist movement, are here assembled on the day of the termination of the British mandate over Eretz-Israel and, by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the resolution of the united nations general assembly, hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the state of Israel. [from The Declaration Of The Establishment Of The State Of Israel (May 14, 1948)]

Yaakov,

in my comment (#11) of Mon Mar 6, 2006 1:01 AM CET to your post "A Jewish Democratic State?" I had written

If we look at the "Declaration" of May 14, 1948 we notice that only the Jewish character of the State of Israel is mentioned, whereas the words "democracy" or "democratic" do not appear even once. [Servetus]

Suppose we agree with Martin Sherman's analysis, in the "neutral" sense that we consider it an objective statement of the situation.

Then the next question is: would a truly democratic, purely secular state, be a solution?

If the vast majority of Israelis, for the sake of peace and a conclusive settlement, decided that the only solution is to eliminate from the Israeli constitution the central notion of Jewish State in Eretz-Israel, would this really appease the Palestinians?

Would this pre-empt and void the very necessity of a partition?

A famous, ancient Roman sawing goes like this:

«Salus Rei Publicae, Suprema Lex. To save the (very existence of) the State, is the Most Important Law»

I think some Palestinian politicians and intellectuals, before 1948 an even recently at the informal Geneva talks, have seriously spoken of a secular state, where Jews, Muslims, Christians, non-denominational or openly agnostic/atheist citizen can share in peace the same citizenship.

How much weight do these Palestinian politicians/intellectuals carry?

Is a secular Israel just a Utopia?
