Two weeks ago, a Norwegian newspaper published a cartoon of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as the infamous commander of a Nazi death camp who indiscriminately murdered Jews by firing at them at random from his balcony.

The caricature by political cartoonist Finn Graff appeared in the Oslo daily Dagbladet. Norway's small Jewish community was outraged and the Simon Weisenthal Center submitted a protest to the Norwegian government. Just half a year ago, Graff declared that he would never draw a cartoon of Muhammed out of "fear and respect." I guess that drawing cartoons of Jews is differernt in Graff's eyes.

This is saddening but unfortunately, not very surprising either.

Anyone think that Jews all over the world are going hold riots condemning the cartoon and calling for the death of the artist and editors responsible for publishing it?

From the comments on the article:

At 10:50 AM, Carl in Jerusalem said...

The Danes actually are friends of the Jews. It's the Norwegians and the Swedes who aren't (read the last article I linked for more details).

I found that ironic.

Actually, I believe he's right in general but there are exceptions obviously.

The Danes actually are friends of the Jews.

Look at the sacrifices that the Danish people went through during World War II to help save their Jewish citizens from deportations by the Nazis for some historical examples of this.

The article is a worthy one, Yaakov. It's a shame people continue to use such images (including the repeated examples with Jewish leaders shown eating babies). But your last comment wasn't neccessary. It's just a pot shot.

Most Danes are not anti-semitic, and are proud of the rescue of Danish Jews during WW2, but this is also true for many Danes who is rather critical towards Israel today. In my opinion there is good reason to be very negative towards Israel's policy and behavior.

At first I didn't like the caricature of Olmert, but when I saw it was reproduced in Jerusalem Post, I concluded it must be viewed as relatively harmless. But of course the intention of reproducing it is important.
