Annan's hypocrisy laid bare

A mortar shell fired by Hizb'allah terrorists slammed into a UN post along the Israel-Lebanon border Sunday, wounding three Chinese peacekeepers. UN chief Kofi Annan, however, has conspicuously failed to condemn Hizb'allah for the attack, as he so publicly did Israel after a similar incident last month.

When a bomb dropped by the Israeli air force unintentionally took the lives of four peacekeepers in late July, Annan was immediately before media cameras, expressing "shock and deep distress" over what he insisted was the "apparently deliberate targeting" of the UN post.

But while Beijing has been quick to condemn Sunday's attack, Annan has not uttered a word.

I know that some expected more even-handness, or at least a less-blatant display of favoritism and bias. Given the history of the UN and Anan vis a vis Israel, I am not surprised

That's because this time he is sure it was not intentional.

After all, aren't the UN and Hizbullah on the same side?

Well Hezbollah did not ignore ten warnings. Neither does Hezbollah have "precision weapons". Two things that make the situation quite different.

Truly.

Israel has laser guided bombs that can hit a target with pin-point accuracy, as we've seen on all the CNN and BBC videos repeatedly.

Hizballah is more or less aiming blind with their rockets, just firing in a general direction and hoping that it hits something. I really doubt that they were deliberately targeting the UN.

So you are saying that since Hizballah was "aiming blind" when it has hit UN sites with mortar fire (which as RobieB points out below can be an accurate weapon), their actions are not worthy of condemnation or even mention in a negative tone by the Anan, who wastes no time assigning blame to Israel whenever he has the slightest reason?

I love all the attacks on anyone who doesnt give isreal a free hand.
OK why not condem hezbolla mortar attack?
1. it didnt kill people, the isreali hit did.
2. they arent as accurate as the isrealis should be(you are going to angrier at the guy that accidently hit's you using laser sites than the guy were a blindfold)
3. They didnt get more than one mortar attack, rather than the hours of attack on the other un instalation.
4. The UN installation that isreal bombed was constantly asking them to stop and was in constant communication with isreal.. were as you dont have to ask someone to stop with one mortar hit.
5. the rescue workers were bombed when isreal hit the un facility.. rescue workers at the second un post were not "shelled" while rescuing the chinese injured soldiers(one mortar shell)

SO should annan condem hezbollah? SUre, do they deserve the same condemnation as isreal with their laser guided missles and good communication? I am not so sure But to call him hypocritical is to not know the facts.

Well Hezbollah did not ignore ten warnings.

i believe they ignored entire blocks of UN resolutions telling them to get the heck out of southern lebanon and disarm.

Filipino,

Hizballah was in negotiations to disarm and turn into a political party, shedding away violence, alas, with the current conflict it doesn't look like its going to happen any time soon.

And they shouldn't get out of South Lebanon, because they are the South of Lebanon, and they are Lebanese. They were the ones who were occupied and oppressed by Israel, and have every right to remain there and defend their territory.

Yaakov,

I do believe that Annan should have made a mention of the mortar attack, condemn it if he wanted to, but Israel is the invading force, not Hizballah, therefore they are under far more scrutiny.

Yaakov, for God's sake. This is outrageous even by the standards of your famous and predictable pro-Israel leanings.

Have a look at the aims of the web site that published this 'article'.

"Serving up a daily diet of news for Bible-believing Israel-lovers hungry for Israel-related news from an Israel-savvy perspective.
Watch - So you can pray."

Well they're 'servin it up' alright, but I'm eating elsewhere. I thought we were here to get smarter.

You can do better than this Yaakov.

JoulesBeef, imagine for a second all the noise that would be made if Israel's rocket hit a UN post and injured 3 peacekeepers.

Surya - Is the accusation that Anan and the UN are hypocritical "outrageous" simply because a site intended for "Bible-believing Israel-lovers" obviously cannot have any substance to any of the words published? Is there something specifically "outrageous" about the accusation of hypocrisy (which seems pretty straight-forward to me), or is the actual content of the article out of bounds when it comes to criticism?

I am not justifying the hezbollah attack, just saying it isnt the same.. i am quite sure there have been many limited mistakes by isreal that arent getting slammed in the news.
The noise over the first attack isreal made was because they have laser gudied smart missles.. the un was marked with 30 foot letters in the hillside, they were on the phone with isreal, they were asking them to stop, sireal continued bombing even after rescue crews had arrived.
I would hope though that if isreal accidently hit a UN post once and injured some people or even killed some, that they wouldnt get as much flack as they did when they royally screwed up the first time. Accidents happen in war and i would fight vehmenantly anyone who would complain about something like that if isreal did it.

From the little I know, the e-mails with staff at the post showed that Hezbollah was close to that post. Which wouldn't be the first time.

Don't even try to tell me that Hezbollah wouldn't hit the U.N. building if they did have precision weapons. You all know that, given the technology, Hezbollah would be all over that U.N. building faster than, well, something that's really fast.

Honestly, this is a war. We should expect people to be killed and buildings to be bombed. It's essentially the same as any other war. Of course, nobody likes all of this destruction. But now that the war has started, there's nothing we can do but wait for the U.N. cease-fire, which will probably fail anyway.

Mortar attacks are fairly accurate. The crew might have been poorly trained however it was worth condemning. Hezbollah is probably directly hurting many civilians by its conduct. Annan is showing his colors a little too much in this instance.

You may have a point although

"3 lightly injured" is not really comparable to four dead.
