Despite the 20,000 troops deployed in southern Lebanon, the United Nations admits that weapons smuggling from Syria continues unhindered. A German report finds UNIFIL does not patrol after dark.

Hizbullah terrorists are free to roam at night without fear of being identified by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to a report by the German paper Der Spiegel.

[snip]

The United Nations itself has admitted that Syria was still successfully smuggling arms to the Hizbullah, which neither UNIFIL nor the Lebanese army plan to stop.

Wow, I sure am glad that the UN has sent its peacekeepers to the neighborhood. They sure are good at doing nothing.

No point their being there. They may as well go home and save their respective home countries defence budgets.

They are best getting out the way before the next war starts. We'll just have Israel criticized for more UN deaths if they get caught up in the crossfire again. There's more of the useless wastes of space so more risk of them getting in the way.

Either the UN gets them to do their job or gets them the hell out.

No point their being there. T

Not only is there no point in their being there, but their presence in Lebanon serves a very negative puspose by giving something for the world to point at and claim that everything is ok (and then when everything starts up again pretend to be shocked as if they didn't know it would happen again)

It isn't a huge surprise, but still this news is very disturbing. It just proves that UNIFIL has no vested interest and doesn't really care if Israeli civillians are killed by more rocket strikes. People criticise Israel, saying that UNIFIL is protecting her. Maybe now, they'll start to understand that only Israel can really protect herself.
