We Are All Gilad Shalit

What would have happened if, during the Yom Kippur War, the Syrians would have stationed an artillery unit in the Syrian village of Kuneitra and shelled Tiberias from its heights? Would somebody have even thought it improper to retaliate because of the civilian casualties that would inevitably result? That would be ridiculous. If a sovereign government decides to go to war, it does so in the name of its entire nation. Everybody is included. There are no 'innocent civilians.' If the elected government goes so far as to use a civilian platform for its attack, the responsibility for the results is clearly on its shoulders and not on the side defending itself.

But in Israel's case, this logic does not hold. Hamas enjoys the best of both worlds. On one hand, it has territory, a democratically elected government, and international aid and recognition, while on the other hand, it bears no responsibility for its actions. It has the power of government and the responsibility of an impudent teen. It shells the Jews from inside its sovereign territory and the Jews restrict themselves to policing the attackers alone - as if they were a gang smuggling drugs from Mexico to Texas.

Can Israel win under these circumstances? Obviously not. That is precisely the cause of the insane situation in Israel today - unique to this country alone.

Good seed. I've always thought that Hamas does not care about what it does to the Palestinian people. They have one item on their agenda-destroy Israel. Everything else takes a backseat. This truce is just another pause so they can re-stock their ammo dumps.

Good seed. I've always thought that Hamas does not care about what it does to the Palestinian people.

And-- a "Palestinian state"is actually not a priority for them. Destroying Israel is their priority (if they coukd have their state-- even all of the West Bank and Gaza-- they still wouldn't want peace if Israel existed.

They are extremist fundamentalist..psychopaths. As long as they are in power there can be no peace.

And-- of course you're right-- they don't care about the palis: Palestinian victims of Hamas swear revenge:

SHADI Bakr Ahmad gingerly eased his legless torso into two new plastic limbs and vowed they would one day walk him back to his brutal destiny in Gaza.

The Fatah man and his 14 comrades in rehabilitation have barely six legs left between them, after being mutilated by their Hamas rivals during the violent takeover of power last June. All have unfinished business: they want to get back on their makeshift feet soon to hunt down the men who maimed them.

Here are some recent items in my column with the tag "Hamas"

Actually, it is pretty easy to argue with that.

So you are saying that when the Israelis say that Hamas is wrong, that the Israelis are really wrong about this (based on your statement), meaning that Hamas is really right? But then that would contradict your opening position that everyone is wrong. So then the Israelis must be right that Hamas is wrong (period)

Israel can not win without stamping out the evil in it's neighbours and this I am afraid Will be difficult

Kevin, it's hard to stamp out "evil" in people born in a witch's brew of hate. It goes back to 1948 and beyond. There were six Arab armies camped outside of what was to be the new country of Israel waiting to invade as soon as the United Nations made its vote. In my opinion the Jews of Israel have been fighting for survival so long that it is created a hatred mindset among some of the Jewish leaders and a portion of the population.

This is a sad phenomenon, exhibited by a portion of new recruits, especially as a cessation of hostilities is not likely to occur. Back when I was growing up in Israel, we were all naive enough to think that there wouldn't be any more wars to fight by the time my siblings and I came of age - turns out we were quite wrong.

Pretty much. Many of the anti-Israel people on the 'vine fail to see this double standard applied to Hamas.

Unfortunately, this is something that spreads internationally. Many are those who do not see the double standard.

Not to take anything from this seed, because it's a good one, but I'm tired of hearing this logic spelled out because all of us here already know it. The people who need to hear this don't even know what the Yom Kippur War is, and definitely don't peruse these parts of the Vine.

You're right, but how do we fix that? A vast Jewish conspiracy to control the media to get this stuff on the front page? I feel like that might be counterproductive...

It's not about getting seeds to the front page, it's about education. Unfortunately, few people here actually care to look up information when confronted with unknowns. For example, how many people on Keld's seed do you think looked up the "Gutenberg trajectory" compared to the number which simply moved on to the next post? ;)

It seems top me that on most iisues--the vast majority of people have their mind's made up-- and are very rigid-- supporting one side or the other. However, there are a small number who haven't. Some of these people never think about the mid-east-- they are busy with their own lives, or watching sports, etc. Others have seen a little about the conflict in the news-- but are confused by conflicting reports.

While the views of most can probably not be changed, there are some that can. I think its those we must try to reach.

How? By being persistent-- keep on seeding and writing articles that tell the facts. And posting comments that clearly state the facts.

And-- voting for articles and comments that deserve it.

"Education" Well, a small part MIGHT be to include live links to articles in Wikipedia when the name/term/issue might not be clear to the general public? It is a small thing, but you never know who might follow the link up and start learning the facts ... by accident.
