On Wednesday, freedom of speech in Europe took a new and devastating turn, as a Dutch appellate court ordered the prosecution of Geert Wilders, parliamentarian and filmmaker, charging him with "inciting hatred and discrimination" against Muslims for his film exposing the threat of radical Islam.

Ironically, the film's narrative is primarily comprised of quotes from the Koran which incite violence and death to "infidels" as well as scenes of an Imam preaching death to the Jews. Akin to something out of the Twilight Zone, the Imams who routinely spout hate speech from the pulpit and who are instigating these suits are never themselves charged with incitement to immediate violence. Moreover if the film "Fitna," which merely quotes the Koran and depicts angry Imams, is "hate speech" then what is the Koran itself?

In my opinion, too many Europeans are craven sycophants to Muslim wealth and power. They are so scared that their oil will be cut off that they will accept anything. Fortunately, the era of oil power is ending. Ironically, many of the power brokers of the Bush Presidency were unwitting (I think) facilitators of the Muslim dictatorships because they opposed developing other sources of energy. Though Obama may be somewhat friendlier to the Islamic states in some ways, he has clear insight into the energy equation when he points out the dangers of allowing "undemocratic governments to wield undue influence over America's national security just because of our dependence on oil." He is right on for America and this rings even truer for Europe. Once we free ourselves of this dependence, attitudes will change. One of the most important developments for Israel and all democracies over the last few weeks is the fact that a large tract of natural gas was discovered just offshore of Haifa. Though it probably won't do any more than supply Israel's needs for 15 years, that should be enough. Obama's determination to get the US (and by extension the rest of the world) out from under the domination of oil indirectly do more to break the domiance of the Islamic states than military action could ever accomplish.
Of course, we still need military action in many case and I applaud Israel's recent self defense activities.

Many grow sick of this one-edged sword. Time to at least smack the terror clerics with the blunt side of that sword.
