The basic reality that the US is being led by a radical ideologue who clings to his views in the face of overwhelming proof of their falsity is the most fundamental fact that world leaders must reckon with today as they formulate policies to contend with the Obama administration. This is first and foremost the case for Israel.
Since the Netanyahu government took office three months ago, the Obama administration has placed inordinate pressure on Jerusalem in a bid to coerce it into making massive concessions to the Palestinians. These concessions are demanded not for peace, but simply for the sake of placing pressure on Israel. Obama wishes to pressure Israel to show his good intentions to the Arabs and Iran.
TO DATE, Obama's loudest demand has been to officially prohibit all Jewish construction in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. Although the demand is intrinsically bigoted, illegal and immoral, and although the consequences of the expulsion of all Jews from Gaza in 2005 show that Israeli land giveaways and ethnic cleansing bring war not peace, the Netanyahu government has opted not to get into an open confrontation with the administration on the issue.
Instead, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his government have sought to treat Obama's offensive as a routine disagreement between otherwise close allies. Rather than defending the principles of Jewish national, legal and human rights and the country's right to security, Netanyahu has sought to reach an accommodation with Obama by reducing the discussion to a conversation about the inevitable natural growth of Jewish communities due to expanding families.
But what Obama's slavish devotion to his radical world view shows is that Netanyahu's decision to seek an accommodation is not simply an exercise in futility, it is a recipe for disaster. Obama and his advisers do not care that Jewish fertility rates are the fastest rising in the world. They do not care that by arguing for a complete halt in "natural" growth, they are effectively adopting a eugenics argument the likes of which no US policy-maker has dared to advance since before the Holocaust. They are looking to fight because they believe that the US is best served by fighting with its allies - particularly with Israel. Any concession Netanyahu makes will just form the basis for the next round of demands.

yaakov, I certainly hope Israel doesn't trust Obama about anything important.

It is not a question of trust. Even if no one trusts him, it doesn't eliminate the fact that Israel is currently dependent on US financial/military aid (think of what would happen to the IAF if there was a one year "delay" in shipping replacement parts for Israel's F-16's). That is why Israel has to tread quietly (and also make moves to sever their financial and military dependence on the US).

We have so many issues at home right now there are quite a few who claim he is spending to much time on matters of the Middle east. Yes it is clear we need to continue to support the people of Israel and especially there armed forces.
Obama is limited on what he able to achieve for Israel as Hamas, Hezbollah and even the PLO are not open to anything other than destroy the Jewish state of Israel. The United States has been accused of protecting Israel from the hater United Nations but I feel it is to prevent a grave injustice from the UN upon the Jewish State of Israel.
You have to understand Obama is the President of the United States has his main focus on issues there first. It does not mean he can do whatever he wishes without consideration of its consequences on all sides of the iles of the Senate and Congress.
You should not depend on any one source but nether can you blame Obama from being unable of doing any more than he already had. Also he must maintain some disconnection so as to not isolate himself from all sides of the conflict.
Trust me the majority of the US is with Israel but as with Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan we are very limited in our ability to respondsolidly in Israels defense. Obama has to keep as much of Senate and Congress Happy to get badly need legislature to get the United States back on the right track.

Obama should be careful: perhaps the only thing worse (from his point of view) than an Israel dependent on the US is one that isn't.

I don't think lessening the support from the US towards Israel is now or ever will be an option for some time. There are far to many friends of Israel in the Unites states even if each individual would have to give there change I feel there would be a large portion of Americans that would do just that.

Cutting allies off at the knees and appeasing enemies. Wonderful.

If Obama seems to be automatically and completely defending Israel. The Muslim Nation will not only not help but also completely stop co operating with the peace talks. Obama must tread carefully as Israel. Though i feel that the Palestinians already think Obama is in Israels pocket as much as Israel feel that he is not considering the Jewish States of Israelis best interest first and for most.
