Map of Jerusalem, taken from Google Maps. Red Line = Approximate municipal city limits. Green Line = 1967 borders. Purple Shading = Predominantly Jewish neighborhoods outside of 1967 borders. Blue Shading = Predominantly Arab neighborhoods outside of 1967 borders.

An online acquaintance recently posted a link on Facebook to an article Myths And Facts On U.S.-Israel Diplomatic Row. In it, the anonymous author seeks to state for the record what the myths and facts are regarding the recent diplomatic tension between Israel and the US. I responded that I think that it is laughable how this purported "fact check" gets the facts wrong and instead tries to put its own agenda-driven spin on the situation. Here is my take on their facts:

(Claimed) Fact 1: Tensions Started When Israel Announced Construction Of More Settlements In East Jerusalem.

My Response: Israel announced approval for plans to build 1600 apartment buildings in a Jerusalem neighborhood called Ramat Shlomo.

Ramat Shlomo is located in North Jerusalem, not East Jerusalem. See the image to the right. People like to refer to all areas of Jerusalem that are located outside of the 1967 border ("the green line") as East Jerusalem. To do this as a rule is misleading. It implies that Israel is building in the middle of some completely Arab neighborhood, located in the Eastern part of the city (the section that the Palestinians would like to be their eventual capital). As you can see, Ramat Shlomo does not fit that description. It is a religious neighborhood, 100% Jewish that currently has 20,000 residents.

Israel announced that apartment buildings would be built. They did not announce that settlements would be built. Around here (ie: in Israel) and to anyone at all familiar with the region, a settlement is a Jewish town or collection of houses that is located in Judea and Samaria, outside of the 1967 borders, outside of Jerusalem. Think: Bet El, Kochav haShachar, Ariel, Efrat. Neighborhoods of Jerusalem are not normally referred to as settlements. (Even the Peace Now website makes a distinction between Jerusalem and Settlements on their policy pages).

Tensions did not start with Israel's announcement. They started with Biden's and Clinton's (i.e.: Obama's) reactions to Israel's announcement. These Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem (Ramat Shlomo, Ramot, Gilo, Pisgat Zeev, Neve Yaakov, Talpiot Mizrach - almost all of the sections of Jerusalem in purple on the map to the left - population over 200,000) were never on the negotiating table. It is not as if Israel has been promising these areas to the Palestinians and then did something brazen like this. Even the building freeze that Israel voluntarily agreed to (receiving nothing in return) was only for settlements in Judea and Samaria. See Leo Rennert in the American Thinker:

Ramat Shlomo, a neighborhood of orthodox Jews in northeastern Jerusalem, is exactly the kind of place that all previous U.S. peace proposals envisaged as remaining under Israeli sovereignty. Construction of Ramat Shlomo began in 1993 (it now is home to 2,200 families with a population of 16,000) -- seven years before Bill Clinton and Ehud Barak offered Arafat their Jerusalem plan for a final peace deal -- with Israel retaining all Jewish neighborhoods, including Ramat Shlomo, while Arab neighborhoods would be folded into a Palestinian state.

This didn't have to be an issue, and Israel's announcement didn't have to cause such a brouhaha. It was not but a few months ago when Hillary praised Netanyahu for making the "unprecedented" of freezing building on Settlements outside of Jerusalem. Based on that, there was no reason for Israel to suspect that building in Ramat Shlomo would touch a nerve - the US knew that Israel would still build in Jerusalem, and had even given Israel praise for this. In this case, Obama was looking for something to cast Israel (and especially Netanyahu) in a bad light. This was the target of opportunity. (Note how the US had nothing negative to say about the Palestinians planning the dedication of a square in Ramallah in memory of a terrorist who murdered 38 Israelis).

For those who don't know much about the area, saying that Israel announced construction of more settlements in East Jerusalem sounds much more inflammatory. I offer the following correction: "Tensions Started When Biden Reacted to Israel's Announcement of Approval for 1,600 New Housing Units in Ramat Shlomo, a Jewish Neighborhood in North Jerusalem located outside of the 1967 borders".

(Claimed Fact 2): Israel Prime Minister Himself Says The Expansion Of Settlements In East Jerusalem Will Continue. Negating the supposed myth that "Decision To Expand Settlements Is A Bureaucratic Misunderstanding".

See above note related to the distinction between settlements and Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem. And even if you want to claim that anything in Jerusalem outside of the 1967 borders should be called a "Jewish Settlement" in "East Jerusalem", this is not an accurate quote of Netanyahu.

The article claimed that the decision to "expand settlements" approve apartments was a bureaucratic misunderstanding. This is not an accurate statement (why they are quoting Sen. Lieberman is beyond me). The timing of the announcement was a bureaucratic misunderstanding (probably). But the actual content of the decision was in line with Israel's policy for the past 40 years of allowing people to build in Jerusalem. No misunderstanding there.

(Claimed) Fact 3: The Ongoing Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Endangers Our National Security

The claim here is that because the Arabs are upset at Israel, and the US is viewed as being allies of Israel, the longer the Israeli-Palestinian conflict goes on, the worse off it will be for America.

Following this logic, the US should invade Israel, destroy its government and turn it over to the Arabs. All of the Arab/Muslim states in the region hate Israel and want to see it destroyed. This is not going to change any time soon. Using this statement as a reason to put pressure on Israel is tantamount to saying that "the existence of Israel Endangers Our National Security". Since the conflict looks like it is going to continue for just that long.

To quote a favorite blog on the subject: "This is why Generals are supposed to stay out of politics. What did Petraeus think the Arabs would say if he asked them the question? They will be satisfied with nothing short of the end of the Jewish state. And why did Petraeus repeat what the Arabs said at face value without trying to analyze it? Sorry, but Israel is not going to roll over and die because the Arabs are unhappy with us."

The interchange quoted between Biden and Netanyahu didn't happen. Jeffrey Goldberg from the Atlantic: "Since I do not have overwhelming faith in the stenographic and interpretive skills of some Israeli reporters, I called the White House to ask if Biden actually said this. It would be quite something, of course, if he did. I spoke with a senior administration official last night who accompanied Biden on his trip to Israel, and he said that Biden did not say tell the Israelis that their actions were endangering American troops."

Update: Not only did Biden never say those things. Neither did Patraeus (!!)

Until extermists on both sides are marginalised and ignored, there will be no progress toward peace and justice.

Theoretical question: What if the extremists (by your definition) are the majority on one or both sides? Would it be just to then marginalize and ignore them?

Also, you seem to equate peace with justice. Do these necessarily go hand in hand?

(Warning to anyone who replies with general statements that may sound good in a twitter post but don't really say anything concrete - you will get the same back in response).

Obviously they would not, by definition, be extremists. And also they would not need to use the methods of extremism.

Also, you seem to equate peace with justice. Do these necessarily go hand in hand?

My point would be that extremists on the Israeli side claim they only want peace while practicing injustice, while Palestinian extremists break the peace to provoke Israeli injustice.

IMHO the rest of the world grows weary of the conflict in the Mideast. Given the anti-Semitism in the West, do you really think the conflict is not going to end badly if a workable solution is not found?

Given the current state of affairs, I would like nothing more than for the West to butt out. Let Israel mind its own interests and do not force Israel to weaken its defensive position. Doing so will cause a very large war (since the Arab states would not resist attacking Israel if they saw an opening to do so) that will be worse off for the Western world than the other alternatives. Israel should give incentives to the local Arab population living in Judea and Samaria to either move to a different country, or if they actually show signs of wanting peace (ie: stop educating their children to hate) than Israel will be more than happy to help them build their economy and better themselves.

If some other workable solution is found, then fine. But forcing Israel to give away land to an entity that wants to destroy it is not workable, no matter how many confidence building measures are thrown in along the way.

I agree.. stop financing such a demanding nation which receives $2 billion per year which in turn harms US National Security. In total we've given $113 Billion of free money to your nation. Which equates to 55% of your GDP and that's not even including interest if we asked for it. During WW 1 or 2 (I can't remember) we loaned Britain money and they just recently paid of their bill in the past few years. A big reason US assists Israel is for religious beliefs in Christianity dominating US beliefs and politics.

Doing so will cause a very large war (since the Arab states would not resist attacking Israel if they saw an opening to do so) that will be worse off for the Western world than the other alternatives. - Yaakov

I would love to hear how doing so would be worse off for the Western World? As to your large war.. I could care less since I would prefer we be like Switzerland and remove our nation from list of potential targets for Muslim extremists. What has Israel done to support Coalition war efforts on terrorism in Iraq / Afghanistan / Al Qaeda? Nada Zip Zilch.

At least the religiously tolerant Barack Obama got Pakistan which is 96% Muslim to play ball and start dominating Extremists Muslims. I must emphasize EXTREMISTS! Just cause a handful of kooky people do diabolical things doesn't mean EVERYBODY in that religion is diabolical evil bastards. Don't try to act all innocent.. there are Jewish terrorists.. but that doesn't mean I think all Jews are terrorists and personally I don't give a crap as long as you don't come crying to US for financial support cause you pissed off your neighbors.

As to your remark of what if majority of both sides are "extremists." Seems like you are sh** out of luck and worldwide you are out numbered. I'm an Atheist and chastise relgion on the basis of extreme fundimentalism and war initiation based on religious cleansing. So as long as you don't dictate my life by a bible / book made thousands of years ago by goat herders in the middle east who say the earth is less than 10 thousand years ago *face palm*.. enjoy your beliefs.. may peace be with you.

So you learned how to cut and paste dany. Do you know India isn't a Muslim / Arab country? It's 80.5% Hinduism and 13.4% Islamic. Now, I'm not denying the voting record.. but the numbers you cite US's funding for UN is based on ~2003 from what I've been able to dig up. Which has changed to 22% as of 2009.

Also, if you wanna complain about big dollar losses.. Watch this Video. To summerize it the Pentagon and DoD cant account for $2.3 TRILLION. Where did it go?

Pakistan is our most useful ally currently rooting out the Taliban and Al Qaeda Terrorists in the you gotta be insane zone bordering Afghanistan in the mountainous regions.. cutting support would be like shooting yourself in the foot and being kicked in the nuts by a donkey scared from the bang.

Overall.. like I've mentioned before. Be like Switzerland and who would want to terrorize or invade you? Former Congressmen Paul Findley goes into detail as our involvement supporting Israel starting 35-40 years ago essentially sealing our fate becoming targets by Muslims. If USA runs out of money.. no support to Israel.

Also Israel's war crimes of indiscriminate pain and suffering isn't going to win favor upon others such as using White Phosphorus. | Images | You reap what you sow.

If you want my solution to middle east peace. I'd wish Aliens blew up Jerusalem in a 5 mile radius so people would stop stressing over the "holy land" and realize we are all the same.. Human Beings. Watch the movie "Watchmen" where my ideology derives from. Where a game of deception frames an mutant, Dr. Manhattan capable of godly powers, of blowing up cities to enact world peace and focus on a boogeyman who teleports to different portions of the universe to create more life and watch evolution in progress for his amusement. I'm an Atheist.. so theres no use praying for it to happen.

You're kidding. They have several of varying degrees of holiness. Sunni and Shiite, ya know. They got 'em in Saudi Arabia, Iraq claims at least one, the Palestinians got one and Iran, too. We can only hope Islam is reformed into a semblance of modernity, and that your aliens aren't Islamic.

Israel is quite capable of defending itself and has shown great restraint in doing so. Although I would hope that the U.S. always remain a friend and defender of Israel it wouldn't offend me in the least if Israel would go on the offensive. People get mad. Friendships are broken. Outrage is expressed. Life goes on.

I found the post by Dany to be quite informative....and if more people were to emulate his post we would see a much nicer Newsvine proceeding to "Learn More Here".

The voting percentages beg to ask "How can we, the CITIZENS of the USA justify relations and with foreign entities that vote against us so much. Not to mention the TAX DOLLARS!

Seriously I am getting pissed off thinking about it.

Not only do the countries listed above, our supposed ALLIES vote AGAINST us, it is so common to see constant vilification as the "Great Satan". They BURN OUR FLAG. They dramatize our deaths and destruction on the airwaves ..... as ENTERTAINMENT!!??

I was most surprised to see India's percentage. Seriously... India votes 81% of the time AGAINST us?! What is that @!$%#!? And yet the USA sends a buttload of jobs to India. I'm sure our activity around Pakistan is a "perk" India receives as well.

And yes Hashi, we know India is not molsim. His post was to show supposed allies who vote against us and yet recieve subsidies, donor CASH, MILITARY assistance.

Really who in their right mind would ever give a gun to someone who was hostile to you, feeding an enemy who PLOTS against us. Yes, I DO consider voting AGAINST the USA's interest as a hostile act.

I can understand 30 percent even 40ish percent record voting against us. 50% or more and I begin to see policy warfare. Policies that result in the death and financial loss of Americans!

Pretty sure this is the epitome of "WITH us or AGAINST us."

      @1formany

Everyone needs to end the argument that all Muslims are terrorists. It's like saying ALL white people are racist. If you wanna complain about funding Anti-American countries.. every time you purchase Chinese goods you are funding Iran. Due to the oil relationship and growing demand. I'd say sell Alaska (oil purposes) to China and kill a flock of birds with one stone..

      1. pay our debt off
      2. leverage them to stop manipulating currency
      3. cripple Iran's oil revenue

One could easily predict Iran's revenue crippled would ensue a war.. as with whom. Should it matter with their revenue crippled? In 2006, about 50% of the government's budget came from oil and natural gas revenues. So enacting war would force taxes to be raised and recreate the 2008 imposition of the value-added tax (VAT) in October 2008 - which were met with stiff resistance and violent protests. Unemployment would sky rocket and basically end up exactly like the USSR collapsing upon itself from communism. So Israeli's.. support USA selling Alaska! Come on.. ;)

Also, if you want to complain about government wasted money. Check out this video where the Pentagon cant account where $2.3 trillion went.. lemme repeat TRILLION in one year.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kpWqdPMjmo

EDIT: Don't forget USA Long Range Nuclear decreasing is to garner relations with Russia who doesn't like Iran and probably wants their oil. I'd rather buy oil from a Russian than an Iranian. Thats just my 2 cents.

I will always stand on the side of Israel and the Jewish people, people persecuted more than any others for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Their only desire is to live in peace within secure borders on their tiny sliver of land within the vast Middle East. Jerusalem must remain the undivided capital of Israel. If East Jerusalem became the capital of Palestine the only result would be the establishment of a Muslim terrorist base from which to kill more innocent Israelis.

How much more patience must Israel show? Why must Israel be forced to defend itself against those who would commit genocide against its people? Why is Israel branded the aggressor when the actions of the Muslims show just the opposite?

This particular incident is another example of the line in the sand being moved yet again. This was never an issue. In fact, as recently as September, when the discussion of the 10 month J&S freeze was first floated - WITHOUT REGARD TO JERUSALEM - Hillary praised the move as "unprecedented".

This is another "brainstorm" by the Palestinians to create another "precondition".

It seems that there is a desire to willfully misunderstand statements, and worse, ignore truths. And now the U.S. has caught the bug.

There is nothing in Resolutions 242 and 338 that required Israel to give up any "particular" piece of land. It requires Israel to give land for peace. Where is the peace from the Syrians? Where is the peace from the Palestinians ( a misnomer if I ever heard one)?

Israel signed peace treaties with the governments of Egypt and Jordan, normalizing relations to the extent possible, although elements hostile to Israel remain in both countries. Egypt and Jordan had land returned to them.

I don't see a way to forge peace with the Syrians until there are international mandates, those mandates being secured by an international military force, that address Israel's security regarding the Golan Heights and Israel's economic security regarding the flow of water into Israel from Syria.

The main objection I have to the return of any land to the Palestinians (again, a misnomer if I ever heard one) is that it was never their land to begin with.

Israel will return the Golan Heights to Syria when Israel can be guaranteed it will not be physically attacked from this strategic piece of land and when Israel is guaranteed it will not have its flow of water contained or diverted by the Syrians. The Syrians have proven that they cannot be trusted to do this. The only solution, in my opinion, is to station international forces within Syria to guarantee Israel's physical safety and economic security, or a permanent change in Syria's leadership, a change that would guarantee the same thing.

"On the other hand, Syria and Lebanon are on America's hate list"

Syria is not on a "hate list". It's a watch list of those who fund and promote terrorism. Lebanon is still greatly influenced by Syrian groups, including those in Lebanon's government. There are terrorist groups operating out of both Syria and Lebanon. Did this escape your attention?

"Affirms that the fulfillment of Charter principles requires the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East which should include: withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict; and termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force."

Did you fail to research the matter further and discover that the words "occupied territories" were carefully chosen to indicate that no "particular" territory was named? Do a little research and provide the reason for the vagueness and stop omitting the pertinent information.

"and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force."

What is it that Lebanon, Syria and the "Palestinians" don't understand about this clause? Of course, we should also include Iran.

Resolution 252 is without merit since it does not consider all the land appropriated by Muslims prior to the establishment of Israel.

Resolution 267 is without merit since it does not consider all the land appropriated by Muslims prior to the establishment of Israel.

Resolution 446 is without merit since it does not consider all the land appropriated by Muslims prior to the establishment of Israel.

Post all the resolutions you desire. The fact remains the U.N. is guilty of double standards. Furthermore, The U.N., when formed, accepted the validity of measures taken by the League of Nations, measures that gave the Jewish people ownership of a much, much larger piece of land within the Middle East.

The U.N. has shown hostility toward Israel since the State of Israel was founded, accusing it of atrocities, those atrocities actually being nothing more than self defense against planned or completed acts of terrorism against it while at the same time ignoring real atrocities committed by Muslims against Israel.

Jerusalem must always remain the undivided capital of Israel. The "Palestinians" can always scatter themselves among the various Arab countries, which is where they came from in the first place, Arab countries that don't want them and have shown little if no support for their cause.

It is my sincere hope and desire that the United States will always stand beside and help defend Israel, it's one and only true friend and ally in the Middle East. The Middle East is about much more than Israel and the "Palestinians" for those who cannot see the big picture. Furthermore, I don't care how much money the U.S. gives to Israel. It's indeed very sad that the U.S. must be the world's policeman. It's costing us a fortune and it seriously affects our economy. The alternative is for us to withdraw from the international stage and watch this world become a huge toilet with terrorism and oppression running rampant, most of it caused by dictatorial governments and religious ideology.

Isolationism and the "America first" attitude will ensure that the United States does not survive.
