Will Barack Obama Ignite the Third Intifada?

While Israel has obviously made some serious gaffes since Obama entered office, the real cause for this nadir in Washington-Jerusalem relations is the fact that Barack Obama seems to have little comprehension of the region on which he seeks to impose peace. The president's ignorance of the world in which he is operating is apparent on at least three levels. He seems unaware of how profoundly troubled Israelis are by his indiscriminate use of the word "settlement," he appears to have little comprehension of the history of Palestinian recalcitrance, and he has apparently learned little from decades of American involvement in the Middle East peace process.

...

Does Obama really not understand that this conflict has a long and consistent history? The Arabs rejected the UN Partition Plan in 1947, and refused a treaty at the end of Israel's War of Independence in 1949. After their defeat in June 1967, they gathered in Khartoum and declared "no peace, no recognition and no negotiations." Arafat said "no" at Camp David in 2000, and Abbas continues in that tradition. Why the American administration cannot or will not acknowledge that is one of the great wonders of this most recent train wreck.

Note: this comes from a regular commentator on Israel-related happenings who I consider to be very much on the more moderate side.

I ask the people of Israel, to please do not think that we the citizens of the U.S. are of the same character as barrack obama. One day he will understand that the war he wages against Israel, will come home to haunt him.

Why the American administration cannot or will not acknowledge that is one of the great wonders of this most recent train wreck.

It is said that the President of the United States is the most powerful person in the world. How is it possible to have more power than that? Obama is positioning himself to be the leader that will solve the Israeli-Palestinian equation, no matter who he has to sell-out to do it. It doesn't matter if the price of said peace is the survival of Israel---as long as Obama can stop the fighting he will be "The Man". The Presidency of the US is only a stepping stone for Obama. His aspiration, to be a "global leader", is fulfilled in his UN role; he will one day lead the UN and then we will be entertained by Chicago-style politics on a planet-wide scale.

its easy to blame others for your own created problems . Beating around the same bush will keep you going in the same circles forever. Examining ones self rather than blaming others can help. Blame games like this will not get you anywhere.

arab/moslims blame EVERY problem they have on someone else.

9/11 was Americas fault cause of its foreign policy. Rape victims are stoned because she dressed like whore. All their countries are in the @!$%#ter cause of the West. Etc etc etc

Please show me ONE example of arab/moslims accepting responsibility for their own social squalor.

as usual you are so quick to make false assumptions and broadside generalizations and judgements about others - just shows the lack of your mental breadth and racist like tendencies and responses to your problems.

There is a saying "what you sow (injustce, hatred and violence vs justice caring sharing and non-violence) so shall you reap" and it all goes accordingly

When has any arab or moslim had enough foresight to give a @!$%# about reaping.

Norsam already mentioned you making generalizations. And if you have a problem with Arabs, then don't learn the language. Jeez.

Israeli-Palestinian peace is an Israeli-Palestinian issue first and foremost. As Palestinians have relied on Arab support in thwarting peace efforts, Israelis similarly have counted on the US in their avoidance of the difficult steps they need to make. Blaming president Obama after one year in office, while ignoring the 8 years of non-efforts under his predecessor makes no sense. Furthermore, any American understanding of the Middle-East has always been a matter that extends well beyond the office of the president. The current regime in Israel is at least as responsible for the lack of progress as any outside power.

You inspired a what if, why not situation for me..:~)

Outside interference has been one of the biggest problems in the area.

Let them solve it on their own... totally.

Why is the arab league negotiating the issue. Why is the USA?

2 party negotiations ONLY.

Why are Iran and Libya allowed to have a greater effect on the issue than the palestinians. (The arabs ones)

Why is the USA allowed to have such a great effect in the process?

The EU and various other OUTSIDE entities, WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO HAVE MORE INFLUENCE THAN THE 2 PARTIES INVOLVED??!!

There should ONLY be 2 way talks..... if Abbas wants the Israeli govt. to be reasonable and modify certain policies HE has to speak. He is the current "leader" of his people...the only person able to make the hard decisions.

The same for Israel. If Israel wants understanding of their positions THEY need to speak directly to Abbas.

Direct two party discussions AND concessions WITHOUT outside influence.

How can the problem be solved while outside interests continue to manipulate both parties!?

Syria, Iran, Saudi, the EU, the USA, Russia, et al... need to shut their mouths, back the @!$%# up and let peace happen.

Just a thought...:~)

Will Barack Obama Ignite the Third Intifada?

Yeah, he's gonna be on the front lines throwing stones at Israeli soldiers (/sarc).

If Israelis are offended by Obama using the word settlements, too bad. That's what they are.

The president needs to back down from his relentless and fruitless focus on settlements, and concentrate more on what he doesn’t yet know than on the power of his rhetoric. Should another intifada erupt, it will have had its seeds in a Washington more interested in the magic of its words than in the painful lessons of a century of history.

And that is the crux of obamas problem, "his hubris blinds him to the truth of that which he doesn't yet know" and that can place us all in a very dangerous situation.

Could be, but I believe there's malice behind his behavior.

It is clear to me that the US so-called federal government represents only itself, and it's own interests....

As a US citizen to Israeli citizens: We have not abandoned our hopes for peace in the middle east, and I do not feel the US citizens are against Israel. Perhaps we shall someday meet in front of either the gates of Heaven or Hell, but you will surely NEVER BE ALONE when you do.......as if the day Israel no longer exists ever comes, the very underpinnings of Christianity in our world will be in doubt......
